Developing Profitable I-phone and Android Apps

This week I have been spending time researching how to create and implement apps for the I-phone. Now I am not a developer by any means, but I do enjoy learning and understand the need to remain up-to-speed on the technology and how it works. Therefore, I have started by trying to create an app that teaches entrepreneurs how to make money online as well as through their phones.

Previously, my mobile marketing activities have all revolved around PPC placement on mobile devices, either in the apps or on mobile sites. Ad servers such as Admob, Mojiva, and Jumptap have been where I placed my ads primarily as squeeze pages to capture leads and convert them via the traditional affiliate model.
Well, it is time to take these endeavors a step further. Initially, I plan to use www.buzztouch.com to create an app and upload it to the Android market as well as make it available through this site. This initial endeavor is simply an exercise in learning. If the coding proves to be too difficult I will simply find a freelancer that has much more experience in these activities and let him/her create the app for me.
There are a number of ways to create revenue from an app. The most obvious is by selling the application to people who are clamoring to use it. However, this model does have its limitations because the reach of people willing to pay even $0.99 is limited through mobile. Another, more profitable model, is to provide your app for free, tack on additional services, and use push technology to convert your app users into profitable leads. Essentially, you use your app to build your list, then use both the app as well as other media: email, web, etc. to convert your leads into paying customers. Depending on the success of your app, you may even sell them a paid version down the road.
Another easy way to profit from your app is simply to install an ad module from one of the major ad servers and let advertisements be displayed while people are using your app. Similar to AdSense or even BuySellAds, allowing co-op advertising is a simple way to generate revenue with your application.
Regardless of your choice of monetization, the app world is worth getting into. The app technology is relatively new and it is still uncharted territory. Successful business models using app technology are being tested every day and those that capture the flag can plan to profit for the next few years.
